10th Anniversary Invitational, Part I 25 February - 3 April 2010 Reception: THURSDAY, 25 Feb, 5-7pm Frederieke Taylor Gallery will be re-locating at the end of May 2010. Our new location has not yet been determined. In the next two exhibitions, the gallery will exhibit Anniversary Invitational Part I and Part II, with works by current gallery and viewing room artists selected by friends of the gallery. This marks the 10 year anniversary of the gallery at its current address in Chelsea. Anniversary Invitational Part I will include: Antenna Design, Asymptote, Benjamin Britton, Long-Bin Chen, Mel Chin, Jackie Ferrara, Mary Lum, Valerie Molnar, Franco Mondini-Ruiz, Eduardo Navarro, Jason Oddy, Justin Valdes. In the Project Room, Frederieke Taylor Gallery presents MARION WILSON, Artificially Free of Nature, New Paintings; an exhibition of miniature oil paintings on glass slides and lantern glass covers of abandoned or marginalized landscapes. The majority of the paintings focus on the Solvay Waste Beds, 1400 acres of contaminated and sterile land, a superfund site near her home in upstate New York. The artist gained access to the site as an "artist in residence" and worked alongside scientists and environmentalists who are working to remediate the land. Marion Wilson has painted the landscape through four changing seasons. The microscope slides not only refer to the scientific aspect of the project, but emphasize the skill and craftsmanship that it takes to create something so small. They allow the viewer to examine and inspect the paintings, and therefore the site, more closely. Marion Wilson's practice consists of working collaboratively with people from different disciplines, frequently on large scale public art projects with limited budgets, recycled materials, and overlooked populations and neighborhoods. All art material the artist chooses to work with is chosen for its conceptual potential as well as its aesthetic value. Marion Wilson lives and works in Syracuse, New York and maintains her own art studio and art practice in New York City. She has had exhibitions and completed public commissions for New Museum of Contemporary Art, NYC; KK Art Projects, New Orleans; Dorsky Gallery, NYC; Shroeder Romero Gallery, Exit Art, Cheryl Pelavin Fine Arts and Sculpture Center, NYC; in addition to Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Buffalo, NY; SPACES, Cleveland Ohio; and SCOPE Miami/Art Basel, Miami, Florida. Marion has an upcoming project with Ecoartspace and a first book called SCU300/500 is being published in 2012. Wilson has been awarded residencies at Millay Colony for the Arts (Nancy Graves Award); International Studio Program (NYSCA and Elizabeth Foundation) and Sculpture Space in Utica, NY.
